Update on the World’s Greatest Music Collection

From our previous post on the World’s Greatest Music Collection that was on sale on Ebay, we bring you good news.

According to Yahoo! News, a buyer in Ireland won the auction for a little over $3 million USD.

Now Paul Mawhinney (pictured at right) can afford to retire. He owned and ran a record shop for many years, which is really one of the dream jobs for most music heads that I know. I think everyone here at 4080 has dreamed of doing something similar. What is more incredible is that it sounds as if this collection was his own, not even stock for the shop. I still can’t wrap my head around owning that much music.

“On Thursday, the 68-year-old Mawhinney closed Record Rama, which opened in Ross Township in 1968. He said he wants to spend time with his wife, three children and five grandchildren.”

This guy is now legally blind and has suffered some strokes, so I’m happy he’s taking some time off. It sounds like he’s been through quite a bit, and I’m sure that the $3,000,000 he’s netted can probably last him pretty well for the next few years.

And for once it doesn’t sound as if this bid was phony. Unlike way too many other Ebay bids that have sprung up in response to media-hyped auctions, this one actually sounds like it may be legitimate. Yahoo! states that a bank has verified a $300,000 deposit and that the rest of the funds do exist. Great news for Paul! Ebay even claims this is one of the highest sales ever, in the same realm as the sale of some private jets! It’s hard to compare a lifetime record collection can compare to a Gulfstream private jet.

Just goes to show you that music can be a profitable venture, even if you choose to invest for your personal pleasure. Maybe some of you should rethink that switch to all-digital collections and start digging in the crates. It may let you retire early if you do it right.

4080Records Presents: iBand

I’m pretty sure nearly all of you out there have heard of the iPhone before, so I won’t waste too much time talking about it.

Basically, it’s a fancy touchscreen phone from Apple that can run all kinds of crazy applications. It’s also about $500, so definitely not within the reach of the average consumer. This thing can do anything! Surf the web, play videos, music, and occasionally even make some phone calls. Crazy.

One of the new fancy programs that has come out on it is “pocket guitar”, which you can see pictured on the left. It’s only one of many music programs, since there are also piano simulators and I’m positive at least one drum machine. Either way, this influx of technology has actually led to the birth of the first “iBand”.

A group of young Japanese people have come together and put together a band only using the iPhones. Although they do seem to be using a Nintendo DS in the clip below, apparently that is only temporary. Intriguing? Maybe. Either way, it’s pretty interesting to see that music really is making that jump to entirely digital. I’m by no means saying that this is the future or anything, but it does show that with every new technology that comes out, someone will find a way to make some “art” out of it.

Check out the clip.

Amandla!!

img_1860.jpg

Music has long been a part of political struggles all over the world. From the use of spirituals for slaves in the Southern US, to the folk songs of Willie Nelson during the Vietnam war, to the songs sung by black protesters in apartheid South Africa.

This music was the turning point for so many events, and really did a huge amount to keep the spirit of the struggle alive.  Protest music all over the world has encouraged activism and been a major source of morale for those people in the struggle.  Without it, I have to say that I don’t think we would have seen half the successes these actions have created.  We have music to thank for more than we realize.

One of the most poignant cheers that the activists during the apartheid-era used was to shout “Amandla!” This is the Xhosa word for power and did a lot to rally the crowds.  The word itself, when you hear it being yelled by thousands of people in unison, it can be a insanely moving thing.

In traditional call-and-response style, the crowd would shout back something along the lines of “Awethu, which is the xhosa word for “To us”.

So basically, the chant became a rallying cry for the people demanding power back from the government that had kept them oppressed for so many years.  What is amazing is that this echoes the cries we hear all over the world.  Power to the People, in essence.

There is an incredible documentary that was put together covering the role that music had in the struggle against apartheid, and covers some of the biggest names in South African music. Miriam Makeba, Hugh Masekela, Vusi Mahlasela, and many others. This film was a huge hit at Sundance, and having seen it I can safely say that it kind of blew my mind.

Check out the trailer below:

I really strongly suggest you find a way to get this film. Rent it, borrow it, whatever. Even buy it by clicking on this link:
Amandla: Revolution in Four Part Harmony (Widescreen)

You definitely won’t regret it.

If that isn’t enough to convince you, listen to this.  Walking down the street just yesterday, I managed to catch a glimpse of a guy wearing a sweater that had “Amandla” emblazoned on the back in small white lettering. And we’re nowhere near South Africa, and definitely well beyond the official apartheid years.  Really unexpected, but it’s nice to know someone out there is keeping the spirit alive.

4080Records Presents: The Roots watch 2 girls 1 cup

In case you guys haven’t heard about 2 girls 1 cup, it is literally one of the grossest things that has ever been on the internet. Ever. And I mean seriously.

I don’t even want to describe to you what those girls do, but it’s not cool. I haven’t even been able to bring myself to watch the video, so you’ll have to take wikipedia’s word for it on this one.

One of the big fads about this nasty little piece of work is that it has inspired a trend for people to record their reactions to watching it. It’s that gross. So gross that just watching other people watch it, is entertaining. And just to show you all that The Roots and ?uestlove are completely normal people, you can all enjoy them freaking out to this video. Shows you the human side of hip hop.

Barack Obama And Proportional Representation

barack.jpgOver the last several years a number of Canadian provinces have flirted with implementing proportional electoral systems. These systems award seats in legislatures to political parties based on the support they receive in elections. For example, say a political party wins 30% of the vote in a Canadian election. Under a proportional electoral system that party would be awarded about 30% of the seats in the House of Commons.

Currently, every election at the provincial and federal level in Canada is conducted using the antiquated single member plurality electoral system (SMP). Unlike proportional electoral systems, under SMP the candidate who gets the most votes in each electoral district (aka constituency, riding etc.) is elected to represent that district. Unfortunately, this means representatives are often elected with less than 50% of the votes cast since only a plurality is required. A review of the last Canadian federal election reveals a stunning number of Members of Parliament who effectively represent less than 50% of the constituents in their riding. It also means political parties tend to be over- or under-represented in legislatures.

Efforts to overturn this patently undemocratic method for electing lawmakers have been thwarted by established interests worried their political dominance will be threatened by opening up the electoral process to smaller parties. For example, in both B.C. and Ontario governments held referenda about switching to proportional electoral systems. However, in order to switch, both governments required the ‘yes’ vote to reach 60%, an impossibily high threshold by any standard. Ironically, MMP (the propotional system proposed for Ontario) was discarded and considered a dismal failure after it only garnered the support of 37% of voters. Yet in the provincial election held concurrently to the referendum, the Ontario Liberal Party was re-elected in a ‘landslide’ to form a majority government after only receiving 43% of the vote. Does a 6% gap really make the difference between a dismal failure and a landslide victory?

In the United States general elections are also conducted using the SMP system. However, the Democratic Party uses a proportional electoral system to conduct its presidential primaries. This, perhaps more than any other factor, has allowed Barack Obama to virtually clinch the Democratic presidential nomination. After all, Hillary Clinton has won the bigger states, including California and New York.

Based on Wikipedia’s tally of Democratic primaries to date, 1,270 delegates are currently pledged to Clinton and 1345.5 are pledged to Obama (including superdelegates, but not including the results of the penalized Michigan and Florida primaries). However, based on my own calculations, had the primaries and caucuses been conducted under the SMP system Clinton would currently have 1,360 delegates while Obama would have only 1,317.5 (again, including superdelegates but not Michigan and Florida). This is despite Obama having won more states (25 to Clinton’s 14) and having received more votes overall (about 9.9 million to Clinton’s 8.9 million – not including caucus states that do not release vote figures).

Under this (nightmare) scenario, Clinton victories on March 4th in Ohio and Texas (likely even in this reality) would see her wrap-up the nomination. Indeed, the 334 delegates Clinton would gain from those two states would make her nearly unbeatable heading into the Convention.

Proprtional electoral systems are thus better at accounting for candidates and parties whose support is geographically diffuse. In other words, the Democratic Party’s decision to employ a system of proportional representaion means it will nominate a candidate who has demonstrated his electability in both red and blue states in every region of the country. It also means it will have avoided nominating a candidate who has proven support only in traditional Democratic strongholds like the Northeast and California.

So, for all you Obama supporters out there, just be glad the Democrats have moved beyond the centuries-old, undemocratic SMP method and have embraced proportional representation. I just hope Canada decides to do the same.

Crazy Castro, or should I say crazy CIA?

The CIA, as you all know from watching one too many spy movies, has always had a thing for wacky plans to assassinate or damage world leaders in some way. This is especially true for that pesky Fidel Castro, who has been a thorn in their side for all too many decades.

CNN has compiled a little report on some of the funnier ways that the CIA has tried to get that varmint, and I have to say it’s some damn good reading. This only covers1960-1965, and I can only suppose that as technology grew more advanced so did the ridiculous things that they had planned. But we probably won’t know for another 30 years or so, when more material becomes de-classified.

For ease of reading, I’ll re-post the list, but you should do some googling of your own to see if you can find any others.

Aerosol attack on radio station Discussion was held on a scheme to contaminate the air of the radio station in Havana where Castro broadcast his speeches with a chemical that produces reactions similar to LSD. Nothing came of the idea.

• Contaminated cigars A vague scheme involving a box of cigars treated with a chemical intended to produce temporary personality disorientation or, perhaps, cause his beard to fall out. The source was the late Jake Esterline, the CIA’s project director for what became the Bay of Pigs. While vague on his recollections about the intended effect of the cigars, Esterline said he was positive they were not lethal.

• Depilatory A scheme involving thallium salt, a chemical used by women as a depilatory, placed in his shoes. The idea was to cause Castro’s beard to fall out, thus damaging his image.

• Gambling syndicate — Phase I (August 1960 – May 1961) A complicated assassination plot initiated by Richard Bissell, involving Mafia figures Sam Giancani, Santos Trafficante and Johnny Rosselli, who had contacts remaining in Havana from pre-Castro days. It was timed to coincide with the Bay of Pigs invasion, although Bissell, head of CIA covert operations at the time, never bothered to tell either Esterline, the Bay of Pigs project director, nor Marine Col. Jack Hawkins, the project’s paramilitary officer. Poison pills were to be delivered to Havana and delivered to a contact inside a restaurant frequented by Castro. No one knows if the pills ever got to Havana. It was called off after the Bay of Pigs.

• Gambling syndicate — Phase II (Late 1961 – June 1963) The same plot involving Mafia figures and poison pills was reactivated in early 1962 as part of the period of Operation Mongoose, the post-Bay of Pigs program to unseat Castro. The pills were given to Tony Varona, a prominent Cuban exile, through Johnny Rosselli, another Mafia figure. Varona then asked for arms and ammunition as well, which were passed to him by the Miami CIA station. The inspector general’s report indicates uncertainty as to whether the pills ever made it to Cuba.

Schemes in early 1963

• Skin-diving suit This plot was hatched at the time New York Attorney James Donovan was negotiating with Castro for the release of the Bay of Pigs prisoners. It called for Donovan to present Castro with a skin-diving suit dusted inside with a fungus that would produce a disabling and chronic skin disease and contaminating the breathing apparatus with the bacterium that causes tuberculosis. The skin-diving suit already had been bought but was abandoned when it was learned Donovan already had given Castro a skin-diving suit on his own initiative.

• Booby-trapped seashell The idea was to take an unusually spectacular seashell that would catch Castro’s attention, load it with an explosive triggered to blow when the seashell was lifted, and submerge it in an area Castro was known to frequent for skin-diving. The plan progressed so far that Desmond Fitzgerald, then head of the CIA’s Cuban operations, bought two books on Caribbean mollusks. It was later decided the scheme was impracticable for a variety of reasons, among them that a midget submarine to have been used in placing the seashell had too short an operating range.

• Project Amlash-Rolando Cubela Cubela, whose code name was Amlash, was a member of Castro’s inner circle from the beginning. He had become disenchanted and made contact with the CIA as early as 1961. Nestor Sanchez, his CIA case officer, was meeting with Cubela in Paris when President Kennedy was killed in Dallas, Texas, November 22, 1963. Sanchez provided Cubela that day — at Cubela’s request — a poison pen-syringe to be used either on Castro or on himself, in case of a failed attempt. Nothing happened. As CIA covert operations against Castro began winding down, the Agency put Cubela in touch with Manuel Artime, the exiled chief of a 300-member, CIA-funded exile guerrilla army operating for Central America. The joint Artime-Cubela plan was for Cubela to assassinate Castro when he gave his annual July 26, 1965, speech at Varadero, a beach resort on Cuba’s north coast. The assassination would coincide with a seaborne invasion by Artime’s forces with the presumed support of several Cuban army officers in the area. The operation was canceled in late June 1965 after it became compromised.

Hilarious.

The World’s Greatest Music Collection – eBay

The World’s Greatest Music Collection – eBay (item 140206309501 end time Feb-21-08 06:00:00 PST)

There is only one day left on this auction, so by the time you read this it may be too late. But this is incredible.

This guy claims to have one of the largest private music collections in the world, and is looking to sell it.

“From Thomas Edison to American Idol, this is the complete history of the music that shaped and defined five generations. 3 million records and 300,000 CDs containing more than 6 million song titles. It’s the undisputed largest collection of recorded music in the world. About half of the recordings are new and never played, and every genre of 20th century music is represented. There are countless rare recordings worth hundreds, or even thousands of dollars each on the collectibles market. Organized and cataloged, the collection is meticulously maintained and housed in a climate-controlled warehouse. The estimated value of this amazing collection is more than $50 million”

That’s just amazing to me, and a stupid amount of music. I’m really hoping he manages to sell this to someone who appreciates it. Can you even imagine having 3,000,000 records? I don’t think I’d know what to do with myself. Though I swear I would probably never leave my house again.

If that wasn’t enough. “The new owner of this magnificent collection will also acquire (1) the rights to Spin-Clean, the owner’s patented vinyl record cleaning system, considered the best on the market by audiophiles the world over, (2) the rights to Discmist CD cleaner, (3) CD Saver 2-part archival CD storage sleeves, (4)Yellow Jacket 45 RPM acid-free archival storage sleeves, (5) ownership of the owner’s six publishing companies and eight independent record labels, and (7) more than $100,000 worth of antique recording and listening devices and other music memorabilia currently on loan to a museum.”

Not only do you get a stupid amount of music, you get eight independent record labels! So you could keep making music forever. Amazing. Right now, all for the low, low price of $3,000,000. No bids at the time of this posting, but hopefully someone wants to take the challenge!

Musharraf’s party admits defeat in Pakistan elections

Musharraf’s party admits defeat in Pakistan elections | Chron.com – Houston Chronicle

Before you all get too excited, this does NOT mean that Musharaf is gone from power. The president is elected in a separate election. The parliamentary elections merely mean that his party has pretty much been swept from power. The Associated Free Press has this report:

Results showed a “big gain” for Sharif and Bhutto’s parties, Azeem told AFP, adding: “If the results are confirmed we will play the part of the opposition as effectively as we can.”

High-profile victims who lost their seats included party president Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain and almost all of Musharraf’s former cabinet, including close presidential ally Sheikh Rashid.

“The results are shocking,” a party official said on condition of anonymity.

State television said Bhutto’s Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) had 83 seats, Sharif’s Pakistan Muslim League-N had 64 seats, with the PML-Q, smaller parties and independents taking the rest, according to preliminary results.

With Musharaff’s Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q) and some allies getting about 57 seats, that leaves about 68 seats to be allocated to the “smaller parties and independents” mentioned above.

Basically this means Musharraf is now a toothless president. Without the support of either Bhutto or Sharif’s parties, he will be unable to push any legislation through. It will be interesting to see what effect (if any) this has on the “war on terror”. Pakistan has been involved in its own version in the tribal areas bordering Afghanistan, and Musharraf has tried to appear keen to crush the “fundamentalist threat”.

One major question we have here at 4080 is why the US is still pledging to work with Musharraf, when it appears clear that the Pakistani voters do not agree. I understand that Pakistan has become a “vital ally” in the “war on terror”, but it does appear as if the US would be working against the very democracy they want to promote.

Still, it’s quite reassuring that for once an election in a developing country seems to have gone the way everyone has predicted. Pakistan has not suffered the same fate as countries like Kenya, and there have been no reports of widespread irregularities. Let’s just hope everyone abides by the decision.

Castro resigns as president, state-run paper reports – CNN.com

Castro resigns as president, state-run paper reports – CNN.com

This is tremendous news! Fidel Castro, who has outlasted over 10 US presidents, has decided to resign his role as president of Cuba.

Some of you may remember the famous Cuban Missile Crisis which was arguably the most memorable thing about JFK’s presidency. In that little diplomatic fracas, the Soviety Union had placed nuclear missiles in Cuba, and the US was extremely unhappy. Cuba, as you know, is only 90 miles from the US, so having nuclear weapons that close meant a huge threat to large swathes of the contiguous US. Luckily, the whole thing was resolved without bloodshed, though it did result in a blockade of Cuba, and an embargo that lasts to this day.

So Castro, the cigar smoking tyrant whose iconic hat and look had inspired some odd fashion trends in the last few years, has finally decided that his recent health problems were too much for him to handle. Back in 2006, he went into hospital and had ceded power “temporarily” to his brother, Raul.

This brings a fresh little breath of change to Cuba. Although Raul Castro has been publicly named as successor, there is hope that he will at least break a little with Fidel’s style and allow some reforms to occur. This could entirely be naive, but I think at this point it is worth hoping for. Stranger things have happened!

Although Castro has done some pretty terrible deeds, ordinary Cubans seem to respect the good things he’s accomplished. Under his rule, literacy and health care have improved tremendously. He, along with Che Guevara overthrew a dictator named Fulgencio Batista and established a socialist government back in 1959.With this important event, this may signal new change in South/Central America.

[update below]

I think I may have been too hasty in some of my statements. It turns out the US has now released a statement claiming that they will not, in fact ease the embargo.

Despite having wished openly for Castro’s demise and the end of his rule for years, U.S. officials said Tuesday that the Cuban president’s decision to step down on his own terms leaves little hope for real democratic transition in communist Cuba during President George W. Bush’s final year in office, although it may open options for Bush’s successor in the White House.

This article claims that the official US stance is that Raul Castro, Fidel’s brother and heir apparent, is no better than Fidel and is actually just “Fidel-lite”. I’m not convinced that’s entirely an accurate statement, but we’ll have to see what happens I guess.

All three of the presidential contenders are all over this as well, wanting to be the ones to bring democracy to Cuba.

Either way, big things are happening in the world. Castro steps down, the Pakistani elections appear to have resulted in the defeat of Musharaff’s ruling party. Definitely an exciting time to be alive. More soon.

4080Records Presents: the Notorious Frank Sinatra

collage-1.jpg

How can you get more OG than these guys?

Recalling our discussion the other day of the old Grey Album mashup, I think it’s about time to introduce you all to something a little newer.

I have no real idea who did this, or where it came from, but somewhere in the depths of the internet there exists a mind twisted enough to try and mashup Notorious BIG and Frank Sinatra. The album, titled “Blue Eyes meets Bed Stuy” is a pretty raw piece of work. Layering Biggie’s gritty lyrics over the silky piano and voice of Sinatra produces a surreal vibe.

Seriously. Nothing will mess with your head more than hearing the lyrics to Juicy over the beat for “New York New York”.

Download the album below, and leave your comments to let us know what you think.
