["What about 10" - Dino 5"]
That’s right Folks. Pitchforkmedia is reporting that a bunch of hip hop legends are uniting to form a children’s cartoon. It sounds like the musical group of the century and they’re devoted to little kids. I think I’m a little bit jealous! Here’s what Pitchfork has to say:
…Thus, the Dino 5 were born. Yes, the Dino 5, featuring the mic skills of DJ Stegosaurus, MC T-Rex, Teo Pterodactyl, Tracy Triceratops, and Billy Brontosaurus, voiced by Prince Paul, Chali 2na of the late Jurassic 5, Scratch of the Roots, Ladybug Mecca of Digable Planets, and Wordsworth of eMC. Well done, all! Your cred with that vital 0-4 demographic is now ensured.
The Dino5 are working through a site poetically called Baby Loves Hip Hop.com. It offers all kinds of information on the project. Apparently it’s being released as a sort of ‘book on tape’, which will be sold on CD. Now that the project is recording, the group has opened its own website and is reporting that they’ve been working on a cartoon for TV. I’m genuinely hoping it gets picked up, and in case you’re interested you can see a video of what (i assume) would be the theme song/opening credits below.
Looking at it seriously, I think this is a great idea. Not only does it showcase the brighter, happier side of hip hop, but it’s a useful educational tool. Scientists already acknowledge the music helps brain development in children, and I can only imagine that learning your numbers through rhyme will make things easier. Think about how great Sesame Street was for all of us growing up. I learned half of my life skills from watching that show, and a bunch of that was through song.
Even more amazingly Ursula Rucker, the incredible, astoundingly talented poet, is narrating the story. That alone should be enough to get you all running out (or sitting down) to try and find out how to support this project.
I mean seriously, look at these guys. Tell me you won’t be playing some Dino 5 for your kids.
