Chromeo’s Electrofunk

If you’re a regular 4080 reader you may not be familiar with Chromeo – I know I wasn’t until about an hour ago. Comprised of Canadian multi-instrumentalists Dave 1 (a Jewish PhD candidate and older brother of DJ A-Trak) and P-Thugg (a fully qualified accountant of Lebanese descent), Chromeo - the self-styled ”only successful Jew/Arab partnership in history” – make dirty, funky, synth-heavy electro music. The duo, who split their time between Montreal and New York, are also huge hip-hop heads. “We’re hip-hop producers,” Dave 1 explains, “if you like something you just sample it.” Indeed, on songs like “Needy Girl,” which features a dance inducing late ’80s “Rockit” style break, Chromeo’s love of hip-hop is clearly evident. Check out some of their tracks below and you’ll hear what I mean:
