The Are: Poor Grammar, Dope Beats

The Are is a Houston-area producer (somewhere an English professor’s head just exploded) who has been making beats since the early ’90s. According to his Myspace page, dude has worked with hip-hop luminaries like Zion I, Phife Dawg, Lone Catalysts, Masta Ace, and Lords of the Underground. He was also a member of K-Otix, an excellent, underrated group from Texas best remembered for “Do you Wanna Be An MC?”

Below are two The Are albums for your downloading and listening pleasure. The first, called Dem Damb Jacksons, constists entirely of Jackson 5-sampled beats. The second, and more interesting of the two, is called Manipulated Marauders. On it, The Are re-works the samples A Tribe Called Quest used for Midnight Marauders, thus forging beats that seem to dwell perpetually in limbo – their familiar melodies chopped into new, unique creations. Apparently, he decided to take on the project after a trip to New York: “I was in NY and heard a Tribe joint from the Midnight Marauders album. I thought to myself it would be dope to take all the original Midnight Marauder samples and re-work them to make new joints.”
