MySpace Monday: The Messenger

The Messenger is an emcee, radio host, and erstwile reporter. He performed for quite a while with a group called Semisoul, before leaving them earlier this year.  He doesn’t run with the most original name on the block, so make sure you follow the links to find out a little more about him.

I believe he’s off pursuing a solo career at this point, but details are rather sketchy.  He is, as far as I can tell, still part of the Hip Hop Collective, a powerless group based out of the University of Florida.

Still, I’m a fan.  His lyrics aren’t overly complex, but he’s got a solid flow and I’ve got some hopes for him to produce some better fidelity stuff in the future.

MySpace Monday: Batsauce

Batsauce is probably one of the odder names I’ve heard in my time, but he’s become an underground Myspace sensation.  Our friends over at Wake Your Daughter Up have featured a couple of mixtapes done by him.

His beats are mainly jazz influenced, but you definitely get some odd twists in there as well.  He self-identifies as being hip hop and soul, but you’ll have to listen for yourself.   If you head on over to his Myspace page you can check out a pile of tracks.  Most are pretty dope, except for train wreck.  Which is exactly what it sounds like.

Here’s Lonely Room.

Batsauce has produced for random artists like The Smile Rays (yes, this was basically a MySpace Monday 2-for-1), who are signed to Rawkus Records.

Here’s Chicken by the Smile Rays.

MySpace Monday: The Lab Techs

If you are a really dedicated hip hop head, you would have heard these guys somewhere.   I’m not saying you would know them by name, or even know they were behind the track, but the Lab Techs have produced some of the best hip hop around.

The Ann Arbor-based production team has worked with piles of tiny artists and their biggest name to date is the Athletic Mic League.  They’ve put out a couple of beat mixtapes  titled “Kill Billboard” volumes 1 and 2.

Consisting of CliffNotes, Haircut, Forekast, V-Tech, they have a pretty killer style.  I’m not going to say it’s the most original thing on the block, but it’s definitely a pretty strong effort.

Check out “Moving Along”

In this track you can hear tons of piano and a fairly simple drum beat.  Not overly complex, which is good because it’d be too bad to overwhelm the rhymes.

MySpace Monday: 88-Keys

88-Keys is an producer out of Harlem who’s going on tour with Dialated Peoples and Aceylone.  The tour, Fresh Rhymes and Videotape and looks to involve 2K Sports, the same company that brought you the 2K Bounce tour a couple of years back that first reunited Tribe.

He’s even better known for having done beats for insanely amazing people like Q-Tip and Mos Def.  He’s even done some work for major sellers like Kanye.  In case you want to know, he’s the one that came up with the beat for “Thieves in the Night”, one of the dopest tracks on the Black Star album.

To give you a quick taste of his style, his a slower-paced “Deal Breakers”

He’s a got a pretty eclectic style, but definitely worth checking out!

MySpace Monday: Uptown Funk Empire

Uptown Funk Empire is hosted on SouLab Records, a small outfit dedicated to modern soul music.

I kind of admit that I love the idea of having a label dedicated entirely to soul and funk music.  It’s an artform that still holds so much potential but is slowly dying off thanks to the growth of other, worse, forms of music.

UFE is not exactly what it sounds like, either.  It’s one man, Bruno “Patchworks” Hovart, who mixes it all himself and features other, cooler singers.  He’s based in France and the Euro-influence definitely appears on some of the tracks.

This guy is seriously all over the place too.  He’s constantly got three or four projects going,  with UFE being one his more recent endeavors.  What’s interesting is that most of his musical groups have been based around jazz music and celebrating that phenomena.  It appears he’s taken the chance to really celebrate the Funk that he loves so much.

Without further adieu, here’s “NOW” by the Uptown Funk Empire, featuring Juan Rozoff.

MySpace Monday: Shirley Bunnie Foy

Shirley Bunnie Foy is a pretty talented jazz singer. She was born in New York and eventually moved to Paris to continue her musical career. She’s been around for decades, and actually was a part of that ground-breaking group, the Dell-Tones (not to be confused with the Australian Delltones).

If you’re interested, she’s got her lengthy biography translated into several languages on her MySpace page, as linked above.

Her voice really has a special quality to it. It combines some of that old-timeyness that makes Billie Holiday so amazing with a new, soulful vibe.

I know she doesn’t necessarily qualify as a typical MySpace Monday post, but the sheer fact that she’s been making music for like 50 years and still manages to have a MySpace page that gets some serious attention is more than enough to make me want to link to her.

Anyways, here is her rendition of “Love”.

Myspace Monday: Santogold

Santogold is no stranger to the press these days. She’s been featured in magazines all over the continent. Most importantly, she’s also been invited to perform at Rock the Bells alongside some of the greatest hip hop acts ever.

Her album is one of the few that I’ve seen that managed to get Five Stars in Toronto’s Eye Weekly. Santogold (whose real name is Santi White) has apparently had the (un)fortunate occurrence of being nicknamed the new M.I.A. Though she definitely doesn’t sound anything like her. To get a sense, here’s a track of Santogold’s called Les Artistes.

I’m not too sure what else to say about her except the fact that I’ve become quite the fan. I think she’s incredibly talented, even if I’m not a fan of tons of her music. In that way, I guess she is like M.I.A. Both are acquired tastes. But you won’t regret trying. To give you a better sense of who she is, I’ll leave you a quote from the Eye Weekly article.

The songs here slide naturally between urgently skanking salvos (“You’ll Find a Way”), effervescent arena-pop anthems (“Lights Out”), deconstructed rhythmic electro (the “Firestarter”-ish “Creator”) and awesomely bass-heavy rock ‘n’ soul. White is a shape-shifting volcano of a vocalist, a more technically gifted version of Debbie Harry and Chrissie Hynde.

[Update: May 20]

It’s a good thing we didn’t try to call her “hip hop” or “r&b” or anything, because she’s come out in a news article to call those who compare her to hip hop as being racist.  She claims she made a pop record, and that’s it.  In my mind, it’s idiotic to call people racist for bringing up these comparisons, considering she’s been invited to headline at major hip hop festivals and also since her album is definitely being marketed by her label with certain comparisons being made.

MySpace Monday: Subtle

Subtle is a band that’s even harder to classify than the Anti-Pop Consortium. It took me ages just to track down any kind of information about the group, let alone a track that I can stream for you. If you don’t believe me just try googling for “Subtle hip hop” or anything along those lines.

For the un-initiated, Subtle is a group based out of Oakland that has pretty close ties to anticon, an indie label that has a history of releasing all kinds of abstract hip hop.

According to SeattlePI, they’re a pretty extraordinary sight live. Here’s what they had to say:

In independent hip-hop, Subtle is about the closest thing there is to psychedelic music. Band members perform with eerie mannequins, they write songs about getting brainwashed, they paint their faces black and white — now they’ve entered into the great tradition of laser dome bands.

This particular live performance involved a whole laser show, which in and of itself sounds pretty awesome. The headman of the group, Adam Drucker a.k.a. Doseone is also a part owner of the anticon label. He’s been all over the place too, getting more into visual art and other non-music media.

Subtle is only sometimes, very vaguely hip hop. But they’re an interesting group nonetheless, and you should check them out to see if you’re interested.

Here’s a track titled “I heart LA”

For those of you on the West Coast, Subtle will be in Seattle on May 10 at the Nectar Lounge. For those of you on the East Coast, they’ll be in Toronto performing at Sneaky Dee’s on May 19th.

MySpace Monday: Chin Chin!

Analog Giant pointed me towards a group called Chin Chin!, the newest group from Definitive Jux. This label has brought you some of the best hip hop in the last few years, artists like Aesop Rock, Murs, RJD2, Mr. Lif and many, many more. Apparently even Del the Funky Homosapien has joined their ranks.

And yet Chin Chin is very, very far from hip hop. They describe their music as a combination of funk and disco house.

It’s a tough concept to grasp, but one that seems to be working for them. Plus, their website has to be one of the most ridiculous things I’ve ever seen. You definitely need to check it out.

I’m actually a big fan of these guys these days. It’s an upbeat, fresh little approach. Maybe not all that serious in terms of deep meaning or anything, but stupid amounts of fun to party to. Check out Appetite, a song from their debut album.

MySpace Monday: Substantial

To lead off in our series of MySpace Monday posts, 4080Records.com is proud to present Substantial.

This MC has been touring all over North America while opening for the Cunninlynguists. That in and of itself should make you want to give him a chance. Anyone that can tour with a crew that dope has to have something special.

The Baltimore native has released a few albums to date and just dropped his latest, Sacrifice, about a year ago. Check our a review from HipHopDX.com here.

Here’s what they have to say:

Substantial’s emceeing and lyricism is on full display as he coasts through “That Damn Good” and “Chain Reaction” in a seemingly effortless fashion. “My Favorite Things” takes a twist on the old show tune and turns it into one of the more clever dedications to Hip Hop. “4dozdatdonkno” is the album’s only glaring misstep, as it contains less charisma than any of the other tracks on Sacrifice, and doesn’t really seem to belong. This small departure is quickly forgotten, however, as things pick right back up with It’s You (I Think)/Go Wait (Interlude), and don’t stop until the album closes out.

To that end, here’s a track off that album, a little hip hop remix of My Favourite Things:
