The Lessondary’s tribute to Tribe

The Lessondary Tribe Tribute

As a die-hard Tribe fan, reading this update from MetalLungies definitely got me pumped: KevinNottingham.com is putting together an ATCQ mixtape, featuring a certain DJ Chong Wizard.  And last week, they released one of the tape’s tracks, a remix of “Check the Rhyme” (from which this site derives its name), featuring Jermiside, A Brother Named George, Von Pea, Don Will, Ilyas and Elucid.  The track is illll, and hopefully a good indication of what the rest of the mixtape will sound like.  Check it:

“I be glad it’s night like she the Pips”

Here’s a couple of new mixtapes for your listening pleasure:

First up is a 19-track effort from JHawk, a 17-year old LA producer. If you like minimalist, synth-heavy hip-hop a la NERD plus dope verses (e.g. this post’s title), I’d definitely recommend checking out Jerkin with JHawk Volume 1.

Next is a beat compilation courtesy of Wake Your Daughter Up.  Featuring jazzy and souled-out samples layered over crisp drums, Drumat!c’s SKOOL+PRACTICE is well worth a listen.

Classic beats reborn: DUB MD presents “Hip Hop Renatus”

Hip Hop Renatus is the latest mixtape burnin’ up the interweb.  Presented by DUB MD – admittedly a cat I’ve never heard of – Renatus features a host of up-and-coming wordsmiths spitting hot 16s over “new, rare, classic and unreleased” beats by hip-hop’s finest producers: Dilla, Primo, Madlib, Pete Rock, Large Pro, 9th Wonder and more.

Apparently, ‘renatus’ means rebirth in Latin.  And on this album, DUB MD and his guests do just that by providing new life to some absolutely bananas beats.

In DUB MD’s own words, the project is “thirty four tracks [of] raw, authentic, no [apologies] Hip Hop music.”

Check out some of the tracks below, then head over to 2dopeboyz to download it for yourself.

PUTS mixtape is free

So, Analog Giant hooks us up once again.  To celebrate the release of Fun DMC, the new People Under the Stairs album, Thes One has put out a promo mixtape.

It’s 60 minutes of awesome, and has a tremendously old-school feel to it.  Lots of quick rhymes and old, recognizable beats.  You’ll love it, I’m sure.  So

Here it is, free to download.

Or stream it below.

Mixtapes are yes at Datpiff.com

If you’re on the hunt for free music, look no further than Datpiff.com.  The self-described ‘authority’ in free mixtapes, Datpiff offers a ludicrous amount of underground, unreleased, and sometimes unpolished music for your listening pleasure.

Although quite a few of the tapes are marginal at best, there’s enough quality beats and rhymes on the site to make it worth your while.  The Game’s You Know What It is Vol. 4, for example, is classic material – “Hustlers” feat. Nas is straight fire – as is Lupe Fiasco’s Revenge of the Nerds and, given the controversy its received, so is Nas’ The N***** Tape.

Either way, head over to Datpiff and show some love for the medium that launched so many of hip-hop’s greats.

4080Records’ Summer Mix

Summer – the season of barbecues, waves, blue skies, beers on patios, packed clubs, and long weekends.  Thoughts of summer are invariably positive, and no other season evokes eidetic responses of similar intensity.  Part of what makes summer so emotionally salient is music.  Dope rhymes and a head-nodding beat are the perfect complement to all the moods of summer: mellow evenings watching the sun set; fast-paced, hedonistic nights at the club; insouciant days at the beach – good music improves them all. On our summer mix we’ve tried to include music for all of summer’s occasions.  We’ve thrown in some laid back, chill tracks (DL Incognito’s “90 Degrees” is perfect for loungin’ to on a balcony on a warm summer evening), as well as some classic bangers that will have the entire neighbourhood dancing at your next barbecue (Ice Cube’s “Check Yo Self” remix and ODB’s “Brooklyn Zoo”).

Make Your Girl An Online Muxtape

We all remember that scene in High Fidelity when John Cusack describes the delicate art of mixtape making. Well now the ability to express your love though song, and simultaneously demonstrate your excellent taste in music, has migrated online. Muxtape – no, that’s not a typo – allows users to upload mp3s and create their very own web-based mixtapes. Each mixtape is assigned a unique URL (for example, check out 4080’s unfinished audio collage at http://4080records.muxtape.com) that anyone can access, meaning you, your friends, and that special someone you’ve had your eye on can listen to your mixtape on any device with a web connection. Even better, Muxtape’s frontpage has a randomly generated list of other users’ tapes, so there’s always new music to discover. The future is now!

Wale reveals details of ‘Seinfeld’ mixtape

D.C. native Wale (pronounced Wall-ay) is supposed to be the next big thing in hip-hop. A quick youtube search provides a bunch of his videos, and I have to say it’s not entirely my style. No matter what, I guess you have to admit that he does have some talent. Check out the freestyle below.

Plus, he earns major points for his upcoming project. The aptly-titled “Mixtape about nothing” is inspired by Seinfeld. He’s a big fan of the show, and seems to want to incorporate it into his music. Apparently he even managed to coax Julia Louis-Dreyfus (Elaine, to those who don’t know) to come out and record a little skit for an interlude. Now that is dedication.

Keep an eye out for this one. It may actually be good.
