Mash-Ups To Get The Weekend Started Right

So I was browsin’ through imeem.com today, looking for some new dopeness to listen to while I was at work.  I stumbled on to two absolutely ridiculous remix/mash-ups, and thought I would post them here for your listening pleasure.

The first is a blend of Beck’s “E-Pro” and Dr Dre’s “Next Episode” feat. Snoop D-O-double-G.  Check this madness out:

[Update: for some reason, you can only hear the full version of this track if you're logged on to imeem.com. My bad.]

The next mash-up appears like a bad match, but is actually one of the most gangster things I’ve ever heard: Simply Red’s “Sunrise” combined with Jay-z’s “Encore.”

This Is The Remix!

After recently profiling some dope new music, it’s time to take the next logical step and provide our loyal readers with the freshest remixes of those very same tunes. After scanning our favourite blogs (see the list to the right), we humbly present our favourite re-interpretations of new heat from Erykah Badu, Cadence Weapon, Buck 65, as well as remixes of classic joints by Beck and Pete Rock. You can thank us later. For now, get your listen on!

Erykah Badu – Honey (Seiji Mix) (New Amerykah Part One (4th World War), 2008)

Erykah Badu – Honey (DJ Day Remix) (New Amerykah Part One (4th World War), 2008)

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Ever since the incomparable Ms. Erykah Badu announced that “Honey” would be her new album’s lead single, bedroom producers across the interweb have been scrambling to rework it. All Up In Your Earhole has an excellent post on the subject, featuring four different remixes of the song including one by the author himself. Of the two remixes listed above, the second is from the Earhole post, while the first is from Fly Music.

Cadence Weapon – House Music (A1 Bassline Remix) (Afterparty Babies, 2008)

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Although Cadence Weapon flirts with electronica throughout Afterparty Babies, on “House Music” he comes closest to fully embracing the genre’s sound. The above remix completes the process, layering Cadence Weapon’s raps over a full out house beat (check out the 3:40-ish mark if you don’t believe).

Buck 65 – Way Back When (Ghislain Poirier Remix) (Situation, 2007)

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

This is probably my least favourite remix of the lot. Poirier’s beat works well with Buck 65′s lyrics, but it isn’t as catchy as the Skratch Bastid original. I suppose this is an example of a remix missing the mark. Either way, give it a listen.

And finally, check out these two remixes of some older classics. The “Where It’s At” remix is long (~12 minutes), but interesting enough to warrant at least one listen and the Pete Rock remix is by Pete Rock, so you know it’s bangin’!

Beck – Where It’s At (UNKLE Remix) (Odelay (Deluxe Edition), 2008)

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Das EFX – Real Hip Hop (Pete Rock Remix) (Hold It Down, 1995)

4080Records Presents: The Bootie Blog

So I guess I actually do love mashups. It’s official.

The Bootie Blog is a monthly assortment of hilarious mashups from a variety of deejays. It various from rock to hip hop, and even stupid amounts of pop music.

Here’s just a quick sample of some of the stuff they post. I think it’s hilarious.

Earworm – United State of Pop (25 Most Popular Songs of 2007 in the U.S. According to Billboard) – San Francisco
Either Earworm is a musical genius, or this just proves how all the biggest hits from last year were pretty much the same song anyway. Come to think of it, it’s probably both. This is a mashup tour de force that says more in five minutes about the current state of contemporary pop music than any music blog ever could.

Check it out.

4080Records Presents: Radiohead remix!

Okay okay, I take it back.  As every day goes by I think I get more and more attracted to mashups.  This is the latest in our growing series of random internet compilations.

Radioheads latest album, In Rainbows, made music history when the the band decided to cut out the middleman and release the album directly the public.  When it first came out, this album was available to download from the Radiohead website on a pay-what-you-want basis.

That’s right.  You could pay whatever amount you wanted for the album and could download it.  That’s incredible.  And while it appears that no one really is sure how well the album sold online, it seems as if it went decently enough!  And the album is now available to buy in traditional methods (CDs, iTunes etc) and so you can pick it up at your corner record store.

AmpLive, one of those internet phenomena, has decided to do a little remixing of this album.  At first, in traditional legal strategy, Radiohead and/or affiliates tried to put the kibosh on the project.  Cease and desist letters rained from the electronic skies onto this poor kid.

However, after a pretty impassioned plea from AmpLive, Radiohead decided to show their class (which no one doubted) and allow the album to be released.

Here’s AmpLive’s own words about the project:

“Rainydayz Remixes is composed exclusively of source material pulled from In Rainbows, re-envisioned by Amplive and complimented by vocal work from Too $hort, MC Zumbi of Zion I, Chali2na of Jurassic 5, Codany Holiday, and Del The Funky Homosapien.”

Sounds pretty dope to me.  How can you go wrong with some of the best underground hip hop talents rapping over some of Radiohead’s beats?

Download the album below, but be sure to check out AmpLive’s site here.
