Slick Rick is pardoned

Apparently our good pal Slick Rick got into some trouble back in the 90s.  He shot and wounded his cousin whom he’d accused of trying to kill him. It’s quite the tale, and Slick Rick had already served some jail time for this crime.

Governor David Paterson, the new governor of New York, has decided to pardon Slick Rick.  In the official statement, they say that Slick Rick has been living without incident since this offence, and so I guess has been keeping his nose pretty clean.

Apparently, according to Pitchfork, the pardon comes because Slick Rick is facing deportation.  The US likes to deport foreigners who commit crimes in the US, and I guess Rick is still technically a UK citizen.  So, Paterson says “in order to allow Walters to seek relief from deportation from the federal immigration courts”, they will unconditionally pardon him.

Hopefully Rick gets to stay.

Slick Rick vs. Paul Simon – 50 Ways to Kill your Lover

This is definitely not the matchup I had anticipated, but to be honest this is probably one of the 5 best mashups/remixes I’ve ever heard.

It’s a mix between Paul Simon’s “50 ways to leave your lover” and Slick Rick’s “Women Lose Weight”. The original Slick Rick song, a collaboration with Morcheeba, had an eerie jazzy and happy feel to it, considering the song was all about how the character killed his wife because she gained some weight, and he wanted to run off with his hot secretary.

Definitely not children’s material. Still, it’s rare that you find two songs that match so well in sound and (sort of) in topic. Simon’s chorus about looking for ways to leave your lover is a strong counterpoint to Rick’s murderous intentions. I think they play off each other pretty well, and I suggest you listen to it below.
